ALEX DA CORTE, ACTIVITY #91 at Golden Age

Alex Da CorteActivity #91Opening: December 12, 2009 - 7-10 pmExhibition will run through January 31Alex Da Corte's Activity series is an ongoing photography project that the young artist has built up over the last few years alongside his well-known sculpture practice, only very occasionally shown, and never shown like they will be shown at Golden Age. The Activity series is of young men doing specific things, and the suite at Golden Age is 75 pictures of one young man doing one very specific thing, drinking an entire bottle of soda. The pictures are brimming with very modern information about complicity, trust, sexiness and self-esteem, they are ripe for your reading.  Prints will be available along with an accompanying zine from William Pym.

ITEM of the WEEK - Even in the End

A departure for the photographer Peter Sutherland, Even in the End is the newest edition from boutique publisher Gottlund Verlag. It's printed BY HAND using photo-engraved copper plating and the binding is neatly hand-sewn.    Using high contrast black & white imagery, and naturalistic subject matter, the book presents a seamless vision that is both the tactile and visual epitome of Sutherland's work. Through the printing treatment, the images almost bleed onto the page giving the reader 'the feeling' of the scenes in a way never previously realized in Sutherland's work.    Book here...

Asher Mixtape Hell 2

ASHER MIXTAPE HELL 2 I studied photography in college. Sometimes when I think about my work, I get stuck on this sentence. I studied photography in college.I studied photography in college.I studied photography in college. Once, in college, I had asked a friend for a mixtape, and he gave me a drawing. It said Asher Mixtape Hell. I kept it on my wall. Sometimes I suspected that the drawing was getting kind of personal. It had my name on it. What did Asher Mixtape Hell mean? What was my friend telling me? Was I in Hell? A few years later I made a book called Asher Mixtape Hell. It was a collection of photographs taken in my apartment in college. A lot of them had been shot as a way to learn how to make photographs. These were photos of nothing. There were a lot of photographs with Asher Mixtape Hell in them. The writing was on the wall. There was the title. Asher Mixtape Hell 2 is a sequel to Asher Mixtape Hell. After Asher Mixtape Hell I thought maybe I could start taking photos the way I did in college, but this time it would be OK. I'd still be in Hell, but maybe I could forget about college. I started taking photos in my apartment. -Asher Penn, NY, 2009 Asher Mixtape Hell 2 - Asher PennNovember 21 - December 13, 2009 OPENING RECEPTIONSaturday, November 21, 20097-10pmYoung Art1727 N. Item of the Week: REFLECTION PASSED

IOTW this time around is a self-published book from Chicago based artist Craig Hansen.  Hansen draws cars crashing, and blends it with beautifully spun short stories highlighting the banality of everyday life in contrast to the violence of a sudden tragedy.  More here...We're also having a launch for this fantastic publication on Saturday, November 21, you should come, we haven't seen you enough lately.
