Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands his head and his heart is an artist.

Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.

Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English languaage.
- Henry James
I'm the type who'd be happy not going anywhere as long as I was sure I knew exactly what was happening at the place I wasn't going to. I'm the type who'd like to sit home and watch every party that I'm invited to on a monitor in my bedroom.
- Andy Warhol
I hope to approach the art of seeing in the spirit of an amateur. I mean amateur in the original sense of the word, as a lover, someone who does something for the love of it, wholeheartedly. The best amateur has the skills of a professional, but true professionals stay amateur at heart, keeping a lid on the cynicism and irony that can pass for sophistication in some circles.

Raff Out Loud

This week is Art Chicago and you know what that means... NOTHING!
I kid, I kid. Anyway, Golden Age will not be participating in the art fair, but we will be open late this Saturday, April 30 for the Chicago Contemporary Galleries Open House. For a list of all the art happenings this week, check out On The Make's Art Guide 2011. AND if you need a place to stay this weekend, I operate an occasional Futon B&B that offers very competitive rates.
All jokes aside I'm excited for two events, details below:

Opening reception Sunday, May 1, 2-4pm
Last year around this time, The Suburban served up some delectable rhubarb treats at the opening. Who knows what's in store this time around.
If you see me puttering around the Merchandise Mart with my eyes glazed over, come say hello!

TONIGHT: Naomi Uman, The Ukrainian Time Machine
You know Naomi Uman's previous work Milking and Scratching - now the much-lauded filmmaker is screening her newest film. See it tonight:

Naomi Uman: The Ukrainian Time Machine
@ Roots & Culture
1034 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60622
Screening: 17 April 2011, 7:00pm
Cost: $5 donation
The Ukrainian Time Machine is a project consisting to date of 5 films and 2 video pieces. This work reflects the experience and vision of a visual artist who becomes an immigrant in the land her great-grandparents left over 100 years ago.
A deep commitment to in-depth understanding of her subject marks Naomi Uman’s filmmaking. Her interest in working with her hands and learning from her subjects is manifest in both the things she chooses to document and the processes such as sewing, gardening, cooking and preserving, painting and embroidering that she engages in while making moving image works.
Anne Tyng: Inhabiting Geometry at the Graham Foundation
TONIGHT at the Graham Foundation:

Dodecahedron with nested cube, "Anne Tyng: Inhabiting Geometry," Dining Room,
Madlener House, Chicago, 2011
Anne Tyng: Inhabiting Geometry
April 15, 2011
Graham Foundation
4 West Burton Place
6 – 8 PM Opening
"This exhibition presents the work of the visionary architect and theorist Anne Tyng. Since the 1950s, when she worked closely with Louis I. Kahn and independently pioneered habitable space-frame architecture, Tyng has applied natural and numeric systems to built forms on all scales, from urban plans to domestic spaces. This exhibition features room size models of the five platonic solids (the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron). Identified in ancient times, the platonic solids are the only regular equilateral and equiangular polyhedra. These forms can be found in nature, such as in the structure of crystals. The installation, together with archival material, illustrates the synthesis of Tyng’s life-long research on advanced geometry and how she derives her own built forms through the symmetries, orders, and dynamic progressions by which one form in geometry becomes another."
