E-40 Knows What's Up
I've been really into E-40's new banger. Especially this line:
"Everybody wanna know how I got famous, how I became a celebrity. I did it independently, didn’t nobody sign me. I signed me.”

TONIGHT: Rafaël Rozendaal at Nightingale

Tonight Rafaël Rozendaal, the hardest working man in netart, talks about life, love and aesthetics. Actually, I don't know what his talk is about, but I did see him belt out an impressive rendition of "Karma Police" at karaoke last night, so it has to be good. AND his work is amazing. Do you really need anymore information??? (Image from www.papertoilet.com)

I'm Pretty High-Brow

A 1949 issue of Life Magazine considered the "everyday tastes" of high-, middle- and low-brow individuals. It doesn't seem like much has changed. If you're looking at this blog, you're high-brow: the "Reading" subhead says, "'Little magazines,' criticism of criticism, avant-garde literature." I'll drink (red wine) to that!

Recent History: Guerrilla Truck Show Edtion
This Tueday The Guerrilla Truck Show came and went. I did a lot of good people watching, experienced a bout of bicycle envy and enjoyed a delicious spinach-goat-cheese empanada from Dodo's. Below are a few objects that got me psyched.
Tim Parsons - Brushanger. "'Brushanger' is a redesign of a coat hanger-cum-clothes brush from the nineteen thirties." Brushanger is playa style. I bet Kanye uses one of these to brush the detritus of common people off his back. Also available in beechwood and black. (Seen at ODLCO STORE)
ODLCO - Boater's Keychain. I've been using the same tired, old Marc Jacobs keychain that I got in a gift bag in 2004. This year I will be retiring my faithful keyring for something new. The Boater's Keychain, a vernacular remake from ODL, could be a proper replacement.
Craighton Berman - Sharpener Jar. Haven't you always wanted to keep your pencil shavings in a mason jar? Me neither, but I still liked this one.
Method Bicycle Co. - Custom Women's Commuter Bike. I. WANT. THIS. BIKE. It's perfect. It's almost the same price as a certified used Toyota, but wayyyy cooler. And don't worry dudes, there's a "male" version too.
Tonight: An Evening With Future Plan and Program

An Evening with Future Plan and Program
June 16, 2011, 7pm
Tonight Threewalls will be hosting an evening of readings featuring Martine Syms (that's me!), Harold Mendez, and Steffani Jemison, three Chicago-affiliated authors whose books were published by Future Plan and Program in 2011. I will be reading an excerpt from my new book Implications & Distinctions; EJ Hill and Samantha Hill will be performing a scene from Harold's tragicomedy Texts For Nothing; and Steffani will be reading an excerpt from her novella Truth and Greatness (pictured above).
The readings will be followed by a reception at Golden Age. If you are unable to attend the launch the publications are available in the webshop.
I hope to see you there!

Objects and Logotypes

Objects and Logotypes Installation View, The Renaissance Society, 1980
We'll be posting images of Pia Howell's Cool Ranch this Saturday, until then an interesting corollary is Objects and Logotypes: Relationships Between Minimal Art and Corporate Design, curated by Buzz Spector in 1980 at The Renaissance Society.
I highly recommend reading Spector's essay on the exhibition here.
