An Evening with Future Plan and Program

Threewalls will be hosting an evening of readings featuring Martine Syms, Harold Mendez, and Steffani Jemison, three Chicago-affiliated authors whose books were published by Future Plan and Program in 2011. The readings will be followed by a reception at Golden Age where books will be available for purchase. If you are unable to attend the publications are available in our webshop.

Martine Syms will read from Implications and Distinctions: Format, Content and Context in Contemporary Race Film, a book-length essay concerning performances of blackness in contemporary cinema. Syms is an artist, curator and entrepreneur based in Chicago, Illinois.  Her work has been exhibited and screened at the Gene Siskel FIlm Center, Chicago, IL; Capricious Space, Brooklyn, NY; Wassaic Project, Wassaic, NY; Green Gallery, Milwaukee, WI; High Energy Constructs, Los Angeles, CA; and other venues.

Harold Mendez will read from Texts for Nothing, a theatrical script composed of appropriated text. Mendez is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago. His work concerns the relationship between landscape, visibility, politics, and memory. Solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Contemporary Art Workshop, Mess Hall, Polvo, and Western Exhibitions, all in Chicago. Group exhibitions include The Drawing Center, New York; The Renaissance Society, Chicago; the London Biennale, UK; vuspace, Australia; and the Chicago Cultural Center.

Steffani Jemison will read from Truth and Greatness, a documentary novella. Jemison is an artist and writer based in New York  City and Hartford, Connecticut. She recently completed artist residencies with Project Row Houses, Houston, TX; the Core Program, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, TX; and StudioLab, the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY. Upcoming projects include a collaborative exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY (2011) and a solo exhibition at LAXART, Los Angeles, CA (2012).

Future Plan and Program is a publishing project featuring book-length conceptual literary works by visual artists. The first six books were published in spring 2011, accompanied by readings and launch programs in Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York.
