The Essential and Incomplete Sade for Sades Sake
Paul Chan
This self-designed artist book brings together the drawings, writings, and fonts Paul Chan created for "Sade for Sade's sake"; his large-scale project that premiered at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
Using the work of the philosopher Marquis de Sade (1740–1814) as a departure point Chan explore his ideas surrounding sex, war, institutional power and philosophy. The ink drawings are beautiful, the typographic poems are inviting and Chan's untitled essay which discusses Afghan warlords being bribed with American Viagra is, well, titilating...
As it stands this publication is the most cohesive assemblage of the themes surrounding Chan's recent work.
